The only son of Charles Xavier, he manifested a multitude of mutant powers at a very young age, after witnessing the murder of his stepfather. This unfortunately led to David developing an extreme form of Dissociative Identity Disorder, with each of his many mutant powers being bequeathed to his many alternate personalities. As a result of this, David has spent most of his life strapped to an exam table in an induced coma, so much of his knowledge of life comes from what he's telepathically gleaned from others. David has a hunger to prove himself, to live up to his father's legacy as best he can, but isn't always sure how to go about it, which led to the creation of the Age of Apocalypse alternate universe, after David traveled back in time and attempted to kill Magneto, in order to prevent him from being a threat to his father's dream of mutant/human coexistence.

Though David wants to do what he thinks would make his father proud, he nevertheless rejects the more reactionary methods of the X-Men and all of the groups related to them, preferring more pre-emptive methods, using his own, and others' ability to see into the future, and then using his myriad of powers to stop threats before they have a chance to come threats. David has an arrogant streak which shows itself from time to time, with David arguing with himself over what he should do, given what he is capable of doing in a given situation "I have all the power in the world and a just cause. What does one scared wee child stand against that?" It's these moments that reveal that, while David has all the power in the world, he doesn't possess the wisdom to know when best to use it, and ends up relying on the opinions and approval of others to justify his actions, for good or ill. Despite that, David is shown to be a brilliant strategist and planner, manipulating events to play out how he wants them to, or at the very least using his powers to make them appear as though they are, and has been shown capable of bluffing his way through situations that would otherwise be beyond his ability, in those rare moments when he loses control of his abilities.

The most defining characteristic of David, however, is his loneliness. In an ultimate expression of irony, David's mind, and indeed David himself is shown to thirst for human contact. This is at odds with David's mistrustful nature, and his tendency to want to keep people at arm's length out of fear of being hurt or rejected. Despite this, he learns to trust people, recruiting his own team of X-Men to help him in his various endeavors to both live up to his father's legacy, and to stop him should he potentially become the "World Wrym", a mutant-eating entity that is a possible future he tries desperately to avoid.

David's lack of self-confidence, which feeds into his DID, comes largely from the unsettled relationship he has with his father. As a child, David was treated as an unwanted burden by Charles Xavier, save for those rare moments when David was lucid enough for his powers to be of benefit to Xavier and the X-Men. Beyond this, he was ignored, and left at the mercy of Moira MacTaggert, who used David as a guinea pig for an unknown variety of tests regarding the mutant condition. It wasn't until David was almost into his adulthood that Charles would genuinely try to help David with both his psychological problems, as well as the uncontrollable nature of his powers.

David's mental instability comes from the fact that he witnessed the death of his stepfather, when anti-Israeli terrorists invaded his home, seeking to kill David and his mother, Gabrielle. It was witnessing the death of his father that activated his mutation, causing him to manifest his first mutant power; psyche absorption, which he used to absorb the mind of one of the men sent to kill him. After this, David would begin to create a new persona every time a new mutant power manifested as a result of his base ability.

Ultimately, David wants a father figure, he wants approval, but in his inexperience, the things he tries to do to gain that approval just end up making his condition worse, as well as having catastrophic consequences on the world around him (such as when he created the "Age of Apocalypse" reality after unintentionally killing Charles Xavier, and when one of his personae created the "Age of X" to prevent David's mind from being further tampered with, and so that David could live in a world where he was seen as a hero.) It's only been recently that David has at all started to move past the desire for fatherly approval, and started doing things for himself. However, when he learns that his father is proud of him, he gains the greatest boost to his self-confidence that's been shown in the comics.

Powers/Abilities: Listed in full here!

Appearance: David is tall and olive-skinned, and has his father's high, arched eyebrows. Most distinguishing, however, is the 3-foot tall tower of black hair that stands straight up off of David's head, and refuses to lay down under any circumstances.

Samples:

Actionspam Sample: Taken from Paradisa.

Prose Sample: A welcome face from an unwelcome place.

comments

To put it simply, David Haller is nigh omnipotent. His base mutant power is...the ability to create new mutant powers for his own use. As a result, this gives him nearly limitless potential.

...Except for the fact that he's textbook crazy, cursed with a severe case of Dissociate Identity Disorder, with each of his personae assuming control of each of his powers. Depending on the canon point I take him from, he'll either still be working on getting control of it all, or he'll be at a point where he's finally got himself together, and has the power and wisdom to literally do anything he wants.

What does this mean for his CR? Well, David's most commonly-used mutant power is high-level Telepathy. Not only can he communicate, but he can read minds, as well as misdirect even the most strong-willed of minds into doing most anything he wants, as long as he can catch them off-guard. Obviously, given the God-mode-y nature of this, I'll be in contact with whoever he's interacting with, so I can know how much David can know, as well as hashing out how much he'll be able to know based on the character he's interacting with.

As for his other powers, it'll come up on a case-by-case basis, but know that since I'm playing him from X-Men Legacy Volume 2, he'll mostly be drawing from that particular powerset. It'll all be discussed directly with the mun of whoever he's interacting with. I'll list what he's shown using here, just so there's no confusion, and the associated personality:

Telepathy and Astral Projection, Tyrannix the Abominoid
Plasma-based Pyrokinesis, Max Kelvin
Acidic Vomit, Pukatus Jr.
Wireless Energy Transfer, K-Zek the Conduit
Wireless Communication, Clnk
Poison Emission, Mycolojester
Gravity Manipulation, Zero G. Priestly
Oxygen Generation, Oxy
Ionic Scalpels, Ksenia Nadejda Panov
Zero-G Nullskin, Non-Newtonian Annie
Skin Generation, Skinsmith
Energy Pistols, Cowboy
Chronal Manipulation, Chronodon
Wormhole Generation, Wormhole Wodo
Universal Location, Findle the Finder
Hypnosis, Hypnobloke
Illusion Casting, Delusionaut
Self-Propelled Flight, Kirbax the Kraklar
Levitation (Telekinesis), Zubar
Phasing, Unknown Personality
Astral Harpoon Projection, Unknown Personality
Teleportation, Protozoan Porter
Space-Folding, The Origamist
Reality Manipulation, The Weaver
Omni-Morph Duplication, Metallax the Untamer
Fractal Fern Precognition, The Fiend

Additionally, David has several abilities left over from "Lost Legions" that he has access to.

Three-Question Omniscience, Delphic
Empathic Pain Transfer, Bleeding Image
Viral Duplication, Chain
Supersonic Speed, Personality 302
Size Maipulation, Personality 181
Empathic Manipulation, Susan in Sunshine
Salt Transmutation, Johnny Gomorrah

Alternately, if you'd rather not have David use any of his powers on you, given that with him it's kind of like bringing a knife to a nuke fight, just leave me a comment here, and I'll make sure that, no matter how much a character might annoy him, he'll deem them to be more trouble than they're worth.

If you want to get in touch with me, you can do so in a number of ways, which I'll list here.

AIM: XDarkLuminaireX (I'll try to get in the habit of being on AIM more often)
Skype: HitokiriDirk/stellarvisionary@hotmail.com (alternately just search for Dirk Ykema, there's only one of me, lol)
E-Mail: stellarvisionary@hotmail.com
Tumblr: stellarvisions
Plurk: stellarvisions

comments
